Forsan ISD Now Offering Volleyball for Jr High Girls

By: Ty Moorman

August 28, 2018

Volleyball is Forsan ISD’s newest addition to its list of sports, and it is receiving major publicity going into the 2018- 2019 school year.

“Volleyball is one of the most fun sports in my opinion. I played in college, and I think it will be a huge hit here as well.” Head volleyball coach Sunni Strickland said.

Strickland has expressed her excitement at being able to coach an inexperienced, but eager team of young female athletes this season. As with all new sports, there was always the fear that volleyball might not catch on; however, that’s the opposite feeling the volleyball program has been presented with since its introduction. Students around campus have shown interest in both attending tournaments and games, and being present during early scrimmages. Some high school girls have expressed their desire to play volleyball, even though the current league is for junior high girls only.

Even though Forsan already engages in a plethora of athletic activities, some concerned authorities noticed the unbalanced number of boys and girls sports, and pushed for a new female sport such as volleyball. The first girls to play have the exciting and important task of creating something unique that hasn’t been seen at Forsan for a good while. They must build a new team, learn a new sport, and most vital of all, they must create a new tradition.

“I think that since we started, all of the girls have improved a lot. It’s a new sport, so they all get to learn the same things, and I think that’s really helpful for them.” Strickland said.

The girls have the opportunity of continuing Forsan's standard of excellency and  the privilege of being a part of the foundation of this new sport.

"It's a really exciting time for the girls, especially our seventh graders who will get to play volleyball for their entire athletic career. Forsan is lucky to have Coach Strickland, she is really pushing for the girls to have a successful year. Coach Taylor and I have been learning a lot, and are looking forward to watching the team's skills grow." said assistant Coach Ashli Irwin.

Practices are held in the basketball practice gym, and are conducted both before and after school for junior high girls. The Forsan Volleyball Team will compete in a home tournament on Sept. 8-9. Participants include Colorado City, Sterling City, a Homeschool league, and others. Most of the games will be held on Monday nights. Come out and support your Lady Buffaloes!

Forsan Cross Country Competes in Midland

By: Hannah Williams

August 28, 2018

The Forsan Buffs and Lady Buffs cross country team competed in Midland, Texas on Saturday, August 25th. The girls competed against 121 teams and got fourth overall as a team. Rylee Evans got second place as an individual, and all the other girls came behind in the top fifty as individuals. The two boys ran with 120 teams and they both placed in the top fifty as individuals. The junior high boys and girls also had a meet in Midland. This was a new experience for most of them, it was more of a practice meet to familiarize them with the way the meets are set up and all the nerves and emotions that come along with participating in the meets. Coach Strickland is proud of all her runners and how they showed up and performed. Strickland said she can’t wait to see all the changes and improvements as the season goes on. Good luck to all of our buffs and lady buffs as the seasons go on!

The Forsan Buffs played Coahoma in the fight for the Howard County Bowl on August the 30th. The Buffs kept up with Coahoma very well until the end of the game where Coahoma pulled ahead to win. The final score was 14-24. The Buffs put up a strong fight against their tough opponent, and they played with pure heart and class.

At the Howard County Bowl the band made their last debut with band director Jim Rhodes. To begin the night the Coahoma band and Forsan band joined together in playing the Star Spangled Banner which showed the respect each team has for the other. The cheerleaders also performed very well, and collaborated with the band to perform the Buffalo Beat. Thank you to the band and cheerleaders who also brought lots of spirit to help our team keep up a good fight!

2018 Homecoming

By: William Cole

September 18, 2018

The annual Forsan homecoming took place on September 14th, 2018, at Forsan ISD.

Starting the events off, the 10 time state qualifier Forsan Buffalo Marching Band performed before the game, with the music titled “Ben-Hur.” After the show, the band headed to the stands, where they would play music to hype up the fans and support the football team.

The football game kicked off at 7:30 P.M. The Forsan Buffaloes started off strong, and took the lead in the first half.

At halftime, with a full stadium and a rowdy crowd, the highly anticipated crowning of the homecoming queen was underway.

The homecoming duchesses included Gabby Gonzales (9th grade), Sara Tarbet (10th grade), and Mallory Ezell (11th grade).

The homecoming court nominees were Macey Evans, Kaylee Morgan, Tatum Miller, and Hannah Ornsby, who were all escorted onto the field by their fathers.

Mary Armstead, Forsan’s Homecoming queen of 1968, presented the crown to the 2018 homecoming queen, Tatum Miller.

After the crowning, the second half of the football game resumed. However, the Stanton Buffaloes scored 21 points in the 3rd quarter, making victory seemingly impossible, no matter how hard the Forsan Buffaloes played. The final score was 35-21 in favor of Stanton. Although Forsan lost the football game, there were many events and highlights that made for a great 2018 homecoming.
